OUTER BANKS, N.C. (WAVY) - Hurricane Sandy remained a Category 1 hurricane Friday evening, and North Carolina Dept. of Transportation has not announced any mandatory evacuation orders.
Ferry service is still running on schedule, although some ferries were moved closer to Hatteras in case an emergency ferry route is needed.

Hurricane Sandy is expected to bring huge wind gusts to the area on Sunday evening.

10 On Your Side visited a Wal-Mart at South Nags Head, where many residents were preparing emergency food kits.
"We are concerned. Sandy is a bit of a surprise. We were not quite expecting that, but we will batten down and do what we are told to do," Duck resident Kay O'Brien said.
Iona Cerza from Portsmouth was shopping at the same Wal-Mart.
“Well, I have some toilet paper, soup, crackers, batteries, flash lights... I plan to hunker down until the storm passes. I'm not going back to Portsmouth," Cerza said.
