NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) -

Three Navy ships are being pre-positioned toward the coastline of New York and New Jersey to assist if they are needed.

Lt. Cmdr. Brian Badura told WAVY.com the three ships, those of which have not been named, are being positioned to be available if they are requested. This comes under service authority.

Badura added the decision will be made between NORTHCOM, FEMA, state and local authorities in the affected areas.

Navy officials are confident the group has good assessment capabilities to make that decision.
