Local Red Cross, Dom crews head south

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) - Local Red Cross volunteers and Dominion Virginia Power workers are mobilizing for Hurricane Isaac's landfall in the United States.

According to Rob Shapiro with the American Red Cross Coastal Virginia Region, two Hampton Roads-based volunteers left Friday evening for Orlando. Barry Koffroth and Ken Sharp with the Williamsburg office will be joining relief efforts already in place.

Shapiro says the Red Cross has 22 emergency response vehicle in the area, and will move in at least 28 more ahead of the storm. In addition, 78 vehicles are on stand-by.

Bonita Harris with Dominion Virginia Power, more than 80 contractors and one Dominion crew will be helping Tampa Electric and other companies if need be to keep track of the storm. Harris says the crews traveling to Florida this weekend are from Hampton, Richmond, Charlottesville and Fairfax.

Harris says 10 employees from Hampton are leaving Sunday morning. Seven will work on lines, one will be an auger operator, one a supervisor and one will provide logistical and patrol support.
