Keeping pets safe during storms

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A rule of thumb for pet owners during storms is, if the area you're in is not safe for you, it is not safe for your pets either.

According to PETA and VBSPCA, pet owners should follow these steps:

• If you are leaving with your pet, make sure you have its medication, identification, food and a crate
• During a flood, do not leave pet tied up in any way
• Place small animals in small containers and keep dogs on leashes
• Bring your pet's favorite toy to calm them down in stressful situations
• Do not leave animals abandoned in cars if you are staying at a shelter. Some motels and hotels do accept animals in emergency situations

VBSPCA Shelter Director Sharon Adams doesn't recommend it, but she says there are steps for making sure your pet is safe during storms if you have to leave it at home alone for three days at the most.

"If you were to leave and would have to leave your pet, please leave enough food and water for three days," Adams said. "Please make sure they're constrained or contained within the home. Make sure you leave a note on your doot or window advising anyone or emergency responders there are pets in the home."

The VBSPCA has rescheduled its Walk for Animals and inaugural Pupcake 5-K from Sunday, Oct. 28 at Neptune's Park off 31st Street to Sunday, Nov. 11 at 24th Street Park along the Oceanfront.
