Hurricane Irene Cancellations

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) - WAVY.com provides a list of events canceled, postponed and rescheduled from Hurricane Irene. View the latest cancellations by city below.

Chesapeake, Va.

  • Parks and Recreation Programs, Classes, Athletics, Activities will be canceled from 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26 through Aug. 28.
  • Community Centers will closed at 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
  • Chesapeake Public Libraries will be closed on Aug. 27 and 28.
  • Chesapeake Farmers' Market at City Park scheduled for Aug. 27 has been canceled.
  • Chesapeake City offices close 3 p.m. Friday.
  • The Khedive Shrine Seafood Fest scheduled for Aug. 27 has been re-scheduled for Sept.17.
  • The Cedars of Lebanon Seventh-day Adventist Church will be closed Aug. 26 and 27.
     

Gloucester, Va

  • The Gloucester County Public Library system will close Friday, Aug. 26 at 2:30 p.m. The library will also be closed on Aug. 27 and 28.

Hampton, Va.

  • Saturday 5 p.m. update: The City of Hampton is declaring a curfew from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday. No one should be on the roads except emergency personnel.
  • All Hampton schools and offices will close at noon Friday, Aug. 26. All departmental and after-school events are also canceled.
  • Saturday night's BayPort Credit Union Night program at Langley Speedway has been cancelled.
  • Thomas Nelson Community College classes are canceled and campus will be closed on Aug. 26, 27 and 29.
  • Langley Air Force Base will close to all non-mission essential personnel on Aug.27. at noon. At 2 p.m. on saturday, the case will implement a single point of entry at the LaSalle Gate. All other gates will be closed.
  • The 5th Annual Mustang Round-up has been postponed to November 5.
  • Fort Langley and Eustis offices of the 633rd Air base Wing Public Affairs Office will close at 1 p.m. Friday.
  • Joint Base Langley-Eustis will close Langley Air Force Base to all non-mission essential personnel at 9 a.m. Friday. The case will close to all non-mission essential personnel at 1 p.m.

James City County

  • James City County offices and community centers close 3 p.m. Friday.
  • All city parks and convenience centers will be closed Aug. 27 and 28.

Newport News, Va.

  • All schools and offices under Newport news Public Schools will be closed at noon on Friday, Aug. 26.
  • Jefferson Lab will be closed Aug. 26, 27 and 28.
  • The Mariner's museum will be closed Aug. 27 and 28.
  • All Patient First locations will br closed Aug. 27 and will re-open at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Norfolk, Va .

  • The City of Norfolk will close all city-run facilities Friday, August 26 at 2 p.m.
  • Virginia Wesleyan College has postponed the start of classes until Tuesday, August 30.
  • Old Dominion University delays the start of classes to Aug. 30.
  • At the Norfolk Botanical Garden: Boat operations are suspended Saturday morning, classes and events are canceled for the weekend, the Community and Summer Mazes will be taken down Friday.
  • TGIF on Aug. 26 has been postponed.
  • 11th Annual AT&T Norfolk Latino Music festival on Aug. 27 has been postponed.
  • Big Bands on the Bay on Aug. 28 has been postponed.
  • TowneBank Fountain Park will shut down daily operations Saturday and Sunday. The park will re-open Tuesday, Aug. 30 at 11 a.m.
  • Student classes at Eastern Virginia Medical School are cancelled for Friday, Aug 26. Students on clinical rotations are advised to follow the instructions of their clinical program directors. Residents assigned to non-EVMS facilities should follow the policies of their host facility. Offices and facilities will be open.  The school will also be closed for all clinical operations and student classes on Aug. 27 and 28.
  • All Norfolk Public Schools offices and schools will close at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26. Officials say in order to protect technological resources, all systems will be taken offline.  Students and employees will not be able to access the NPS website, e-mail or the computer network until at least Sunday, Aug. 28.
  • Nauticus and Battleship Wisconsin will be closed Aug. 27 and 28.
  • Visitation at the Norfolk City Jail is canceled for Aug. 28
  • The 'Community Conversation', co-sponsored by the City of Norfolk and Old Dominion University, has been postponed.
  • Macarthur Center will be closed Aug. 27.
  • Norfolk Botanical Garden will be closed Aug. 26, 27 and 28. The Community Maze and Summer Maze have been taken down. Other mazes have also been dismantled.
  • Norfolk Public Schools football games have been cancelled.
  • Virginia Wesleyan College has postponed the start of classes until Aug. 30.
  • Residence halls at Norfolk State closed at 2 p.m. Friday. They will re-open at 4 p.m. Aug. 29.
  • The Hunter House Victorian Museum, located Downtown, will be closed Aug. 27 and 28.
  • Norfolk Circuit, General District and Juvenile and Domestic Relations Courts will be closed from Aug. 25 until Aug. 30 at 8:30 a.m.
  • All HRT transit service has been suspended for Aug. 27.
  • Bethel Baptist Church will not hold service on Aug. 28.
  • Azalea
    • Baptist Church will not hold service on Aug. 28.

    Portsmouth, Va.

    • 5:40 p.m. Saturday update: The City of Portsmouth announces that an emergency curfew will be effective 8 p.m. till 8 a.m. tomorrow.
    • The Portsmouth Humane Society will be closed Aug. 27, 28 and 29.
    • Portsmouth City office shut down at 1 p.m. Friday. Libraries, museums and recreation centers will be closed Aug. 27 and 28.
    • Visitation at the Hampton Roads Regional Jail has been canceled for Aug. 26, 27 and 28.
    • Chesapeake Bay and Eastern Shore is closed to shellfish harvesting though Sept. 3.

    Suffolk, Va. 

    •  City of Suffolk offices will close at noon Aug. 26. All public libraries, the Visitor's Center and all Parks and Recreation Centers will also be closed this weekend.
    • All weekend City Sponsored activities have been canceled including the Farmer's Market at Market Park, TGIF at Bennett's Creek Park, Suffolk Summer Slam at Bennett's Creek Park, all picnic shelter rentals at Lake Meade Park, Bennett's Creek Park, Sleepy Hole Park and Lone Star Lakes Lounge and Jericho Community Day.
    • All Suffolk Public Schools afternoon and evening activities have been cancelled for Aug. 26.
    • Suffolk Christian Church will be closed on Aug. 28.

    Virginia Beach, Va.

    • Beach FamFest is canceled on Aug. 26.
    • Funk Fest is Friday night only, and is canceled Saturday, Aug. 27.
    • All nightly entertainment at 13th, 17th, 24th, 25th, 27th and Beach Street is canceled for Saturday and Sunday.
    • The Tidewater Region Antique Automobile Club of America's Wings and Wheels Car show has been rescheduled for Oct. 15.
    • The 49th Annual Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championships scheduled for Aug 27 and 28 has been cancelled. The competition between surfers under 18-years-of-age will be completed by Friday.
    • The Mary Chapin Carpenter performance scheduled for Aug. 26 at the Sandler Center has been rescheduled for October 6.
    • Virginia Beach libraries, recreation centers, parks and aquarium will be closed Aug. 27 and 28.
    • Public beaches will be closed to swimming, wading and surfing starting at noon Aug. 27. until lifeguard services resume on Aug. 28. The closure is effective for all bayfront and oceanfront beaches in the city.
    • All Virginia Beach district football games have been rescheduled for Aug. 26.
    • All three historic houses owned and operated by the city, the Adam Thoroughgood House, the Francis Land House and the Lynnhaven House, will be closed Aug. 26, 27 and 28.
    • Lynnhaven Mall will be closed Aug. 27.
    • Cheapeake Bay and Eastern Shore is closed to shellfish harvesting though Sept. 3.
    • Eastern Shore Chapel has canceled services for Aug. 28.

    Williamsburg, Va.

    • The Pat Benetar concerts on Aug. 27 and 28 at Busch Gardens' Royal Palace Theatre are canceled.
    • Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools will be closed on Friday, Aug. 26. Twelve-month employees and all School Emergency Response Team (SERT) members who have already started a contract year will report to work. Liberal leave is in effect for non-SERT employees.  All after-school events are also canceled.
    • The College of William and Mary has canceled classes Friday through Monday. Residence halls will close at noon Friday and will re-open at 5 p.m. Monday.
    • Quarterpath Recreation Center pool is closed and will remain closed until Monday, August 29 and Waller Mill Park will be closed Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28. The Williamsburg Farmers Market is canceled for Saturday, August 27 and the Williamsburg Regional Library is closed Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28.
    • Colonial Williamsburg's Historic Area and Museums will be closed Aug. 27 and 28.
    • The Pottery complex will be closed Aug. 27. The complex plans to re-open on Sunday, but should those plans change customers can call 564-3326 for business hours.

    Wallops Island, Va.

    Yorktown, Va.

    • Both Historic Jamestowne and Yorktown Battlefield will be closed on Aug. 27-28.
       

    Currituck, N.C.

    • Since Dare County issued a mandatory evacuation for tourists, school administrators have decided to also close schools for Thursday, Aug. 25 to avoid the increased volume of traffic on the highways. The workday is optional for 10 month employees; 12 month employees must contact their supervisors if they are not coming in to work.

    Dare County, N.C.

    • Dare County Schools will be closed Thursday, Aug. 25 and Friday, Aug. 26. Student will have to makeup those days on Saturday, September 10 and Wednesday, November 23. Officials say both days will be half-days.

      Elizabeth City, N.C. 

    • All classes at Elizabeth City State University scheduled for after noon on Friday have been canceled when residence halls will also close. Students who cannot arrange lodging away from the area will be housed in the R. L. Vaughan Center.
    • Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools will close two hours early
    • on Friday, Aug. 26.
