HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - The City of Hampton is beginning its assessment of storm damage following Hurricane Sandy and closed its shelter.

At 7 a.m. Tuesday, the shelter at Phenix School closed and residents of Paula Maria were receiving transportation to their apartments, according to a release from the City of Hampton.

Fire crews will be driving through the area to look for damage. Any areas that saw flooding will receive visits from staff members with Community Development. Anyone with damage reports should call 311 (757-727-8311 from a cell phone).

According to the City of Hampton, Resort Boulevard and First Street in Buckroe have deposits of sand and Bonita Drive, Harris Creek and Dandy Point roads continue to have standing water. These roads have restricted access and drivers are asked to stay away until they are clear.

Anyone who has parked their vehicles on higher ground, including Francis Asbury Elementary School on Beach Road, should move their vehicles back to their homes.

While Hampton Public Schools are operating on a two-hour delay, city offices, courts and parks are open during normal hours. Monday’s trash collection will take place on Wednesday, while Tuesdays will be rescheduled for Saturday.
