VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Hurricane Earl kicked up wind and light rain as the storm began its pass by Virginia's coast. Virginia Beach dodged a major storm as Hurricane Earl, a Category 2 storm, stayed out to sea.

The Oceanfront could see wind gusts of up to 45 mph as Earl continues onward. Minor tidal flooding may be possible as high tide approaches later this afternoon at 5:11 p.m. However, by mid-afternoon much of southeastern Virginia should see some sun.

Emergency officials say there have been no calls for assistance related to the storm.

Electric utility Dominion is reporting scattered outages in the area.

The Virginia Beach Fishing Pier is taking a beating, but holding it's own, according to WAVY News 10's Art Kohn who's reporting from the Oceanfront.

Despite the large surf, Chopper 10 caught some people braving the waves at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. See video shot by Chopper 10 to the left of this story.
