Currituck, Dare lift evacuation orders

BUXTON, N.C. (AP) - Currituck County has lifted its evacuation order for all visitors. However, some evacuation orders remain in place for parts of Dare County.

Vacationers interested in returning to the area are advised to call their realty companies for information regarding the accessibility of their specific location.

The county's Emergency Operations Center has been deactivated, however 911 communications and emergency services will remain functional.

Damage assessment in Carova is underway behind the dune line only. Debris assessment on the beach will be initiated as the water recedes and a decision on re-entry into Carova will be made when damage assessment is complete.

As for Dare County, a preliminary damage assessment indicates that conditions following Hurricane Earl will allow re-entry to the northern and mainland portions of the county.

Mandatory evacuation orders have been lifted for areas north of Oregon Inlet including the Towns of Duck, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Manteo, Nags Head, Southern Shores and the unincorporated areas of Dare County north of Oregon Inlet.

The Town of Duck is, however, experiencing water on the road in the typical areas that would occur during any storm with heavy rains. The area in southern Duck at the intersection of NC 12 (Duck Road) and the Tuckahoe subdivision is still experiencing some flooding. Although it is passable, caution, patience, and extra time should be allocated when returning to Duck and Corolla.

Mandatory evacuation orders are still in place for Hatteras Island due to sand and standing water on NC Highway 12. Villages affected by the continuation of this evacuation order include Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco, and Hatteras.
