Hampton damage estimate released

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - Several homes and a business in Hampton have reported extensive damage from Hurricane Sandy.

Fred Gaskins with the City of Hampton says the damage is worth around $500,000 according to a preliminary damage estimate.

"We had about 34 homes that received some damage," Gaskins said. 

All of the structures are livable.

Crews are working to restore sand washed off the beach. Bulldozers and front-end loaders are moving sand along Buckroe Beach. Jim Roberts who lives near Buckroe Beach says after "the beach was half as big as it was" before the storm.

John Patterson, a homeowner who also lives close to the beach said waves crashed under his Chesapeake Bay front home as high as 8 feet on Monday morning. That now means a big job for him.

"[I have to] clean up some storm debris," Patterson said. "The water washed out the side and I'm trying to level that back out, pick up the bulkhead, clean it up, get some of this stuff out of here."

City crews continue to try to get things back to normal as quickly as possible according to Gaskins.
