CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Two hundred fifty seven teenagers are making a difference this week in Hampton Roads. A Chesapeake home is getting a new roof, but it's not construction workers doing the job -- it's local teenagers.
“We're just helping out,” said college student, Morgan Jones. Instead of relaxing on her summer break, Jones is helping to repair local homes in need.
“We're putting this metal up and under the house to get ready...for the shingles,” said Jones.
More than 200 high school and college students like Jones are changing the community with a group called World Changers, part of the Southern Baptist Association. Hundreds of teens from 14 different churches, in seven different states are working on more than 20 projects this week.
The students pay $260 - out of their own pockets - and volunteer their time with a lofty purpose, according to crew leader Jonathan McLendon.
“[We're] trying to share the love of Jesus by fixing her roof,” McLendon said.
Teens are installing a new wheelchair ramp at Gladys White's home for the third time. Last year, the teens installed new flooring. But this time, White can't hear the racket outside her window because of a recent illness that left the 77-year-old deaf. But she's not at a loss for words, “It's a blessing. It's a blessing from the Lord."
Anne Walker gave the team at her home a helping hand. “They've done things in two days that I couldn't have done in two years,” said Walker.
World Changers teams will be in Norfolk next week and in Portsmouth this July. Homeowners who need work done must apply through the local Baptist Association in their city.
