VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - More and more families are struggling to put food on the table in this tough economy. Thursday, children made a special delivery to a local man trying to do his part to help fight hunger.

WAVY.com first told you about Kenneth Basnight in September when he came to us for help in his mission to feed needy seniors. His "Golden Age Food for Life" ministry has turned into a lifeline for many of them.

"We got some more corn," said one little girl.

Corn is just the beginning. Sitting in the middle of the room is a table full of food including soup, oatmeal and rice. They are all laid out for a for one special reason.

"We are collecting food for the older people that don't have food," said Amara Lally.

Eight-year-old Lally is just one of kids in the Aragona Village Moose Youth Group that saw our story in September, profiling Kenneth Basnight and his mission to feed senior citizens. From that point, the kids had a mission of their own.

"Some of them can't afford food," said a group member.

They went into the community collecting everything they could get their little hands on. Thursday night, they wanted to give Basnight the fruits of their labor.

"This is just amazing and it's so needed right now," said Basnight.

Basnight started the "Golden Age Food for Life" Ministry a year ago. WAVY.com followed him around Hampton Roads as he made stop after stop. His goal: to make sure home-bound senior citizens don't go hungry.

"Without this we couldn't do what we," said Basnight looking at the spread of food.

Basnight says food has been hard to come by, especially in today's economy, but these deliveries are extra special.

"The propensity that motivates me to keep going, it's just seeing what the kids do," added Basnight. "Children so young to have a desire to do this."

"It makes me very happy to help other older people," added Lally.

The kids say they don't plan to stop here. They want to keep helping and doing good things for those in need.

The group gave Basnight another surprise Thursday - they said they were teaming up with the Blue Knight Motorcycle group and are planning a poker run in the spring. All proceeds will go to helping feed the elderly.
