NORFOLK, Va. - As clean up from the November Nor'easter begins, the Norfolk Department of Public Works has announced debris collection and clean-up procedures.

For questions regarding debris collection in Norfolk, call 441-5813.

Norfolk Curbside Trash Collection

Regular household trash and recycling collection normally scheduled for Friday, November 13 will be collected on Monday November 16. Residents are encouraged to place their trash, recycling and bulk waste at the curb by 7 a.m. From now through mid-December, waste quantity limits are lifted and citizens will not need to call to schedule bulk waste pick-up. Please separate trash into distinct piles for yard waste and for construction and debris as follows:

Place leaves and grass clippings in clear bags, and bundle and tie tree limbs longer than 4 feet, 6 inches in diameter. For tree limbs larger than this diameter, the homeowner must make arrangements with a private hauler or the City by calling Waste Management at 441-5813.

All food waste must be placed in the 90-gallon trash cart.

Norfolk City Debris and Bulk Waste Drop-off Sites

Drop-off site hours are Monday through Sunday from 8 a.m to 6 p.m. through Sunday, November 22.

Citizens can drop off bulk waste at one of the following City sites:

  • Tarrallton Park (2165 Helsey Street).
  • Community Beach Parking Lot (100 West Ocean View) across from the Senior Center at Norfolk Avenue
  • Powhatan Field Parking Lot-behind ODU on Powhatan Avenue between 43rd and 49th Streets.
  • SPSA Debris and Bulk Waste Drop-off

Citizens may also drop off bulk waste items at the SPSA Transfer Station at 3136 Woodland Avenue at the intersection of Virginia Beach Boulevard and Ballentine Boulevard, behind the SPCA. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The weekday fee for trash and yard debris is being waived through mid-December. SPSA is available to citizens for drop off on weekends year-round.

Virginia Beach Yard Waste Collection Guidelines

Given the amount of yard debris from the storm and the increased quantities from the leaf season, the amount of yard debris for collection will be considerably above normal and may take 2 to 3 weeks to collect. Collections will focus first on bagged yard debris, with woody debris picked up as soon as possible.

Residents may place yard debris at curbside for collection by the City as follows: Tree limbs should be no more than 4 feet long and 6 inches in diameter and placed in piles not to exceed 4 x 4 x 4 feet. Smaller debris should be bagged in securely tied clear plastic bags not to exceed 25 lbs. per bag. A work order is not required for curbside collection.

Tree removal debris is not picked up at curbside, however residents may request that it be collected through the Yard Debris Container Program, provided each piece is no larger than 6 inches in diameter and fits totally within the container. Residents who wish to schedule a container may do so by calling 385-4650 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Please note that any work done by private contractors must be disposed of by the contractor.

Residents are urged to place yard debris, as well as waste and recycle containers, outside of the drainage flow line (a few inches away from the curb) to keep the drainage flow line clear and avoid neighborhood flooding.

Currituck County will conduct a Household Hazardous Waste Pickup on Saturday, December 5, 2009.
