HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) - The road work scheduled for the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel Friday has been postponed due to impending weather.

The Virginia Department of Transportation told WAVY.com the work on the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel southbound will now take place from 8 p.m. on April 27 until 6 a.m. on April 30.

That work was originally scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. April 20.

Additionally, road work on the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel eastbound originally scheduled to begin April 20 has been pushed back to the weekend of May 4, VDOT said.

The work on the High Rise Bridge to install a reconditioned motor will still go on as planned. Both directions will close Sunday, April 22 at 6:30 a.m. It should reopen at 10:30 a.m.

VDOT has described the detour for the High Rise Bridge as follows:

  • From I-64 west, motorists should take the Route 17 George Washington Highway exit. Next make a left on George Washington Highway and proceed to Frederick Boulevard. Make a left onto Frederick Boulevard, then take the I-264 east ramp on the right. Proceed on I-264 east, through the Downtown Tunnel. Stay in the right lane and after exiting the tunnel take the I-464 south exit. Follow I-464 south until you reach the I-64 west exit.
  • From I-64 east take the I- 464 north exit. Follow I-464 north to the I-264 west (Downtown Tunnel) exit. Proceed on I-264 west to the Frederick Boulevard exit. Exit at the bottom of the ramp and stay to the left. Make a left on Route 17 south. Follow Route 17 south to George Washington Highway and make a right. Proceed on George Washington Highway to the I-64 east ramp.

For the Gilmerton Bridge, all lanes will still close the weekend of April 27 for maintenance. It will close at 8 p.m. Friday and will reopen April 30 by 5 a.m.
