HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) - Although overnight temperatures caused some freezing on area roadways and increasing temperatures are improving conditions, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews will continue to apply abrasives throughout the day.
VDOT crews have been and will continue to monitor roadway conditions for potential icing. While most area interstates and primaries are demonstrating minor to moderate conditions, motorists are advised to drive cautiously, particularly on overpasses, bridges and ramps.
Motorists are encouraged to check road conditions before traveling throughout the day by visiting www.511Virginia.org, clicking through “Road Conditions.” Right above the map is a link reading: “Click here for a list of road conditions, including secondary roads.” Click on this link, then in the drop-down box click on the desired location. A text box of road conditions will appear.
VDOT urges motorists to observe the following winter driving tips:
Keep an emergency driving kit in your car and wear your seatbelt.
Keep a safe distance of at least five seconds behind other vehicles.
Be aware of potentially icy areas such as shady spots and bridges.
When driving on ice, don’t slam on your brakes. Tap your breaks gently. Turn slowly. Sudden changes can cause your car to spin out of control.
To report a maintenance issue, call VDOT’s Customer Service Center at 1-800-FOR-ROAD (1-800-367-7623).
