HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) - Interstate 64 eastbound at the HRBT was reduced to one lane Wednesday, due to an accident involving a U.S. Postal truck.

A spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) said the truck was entering the eastbound side of the tunnel at around 4 a.m., when it hit a protective device -- called a crash cushion -- at the end of a work zone. The crash apparently damaged the fuel tank and caused it to spill some fuel along the highway. A crash cushion, according to VDOT, is supposed to stop a vehicle from entering a work zone.

The accident created a major morning rush hour traffic backup for hours.

One of the westbound lanes at the Downtown tunnel was also closed Wednesday morning, due to some overnight repair/maintenance work.
