VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A lot on the line for two local teams in the NCAA Division III men's basketball tournament. Which team's season lives on? Who has to go home? Will be Virginia Wesleyan or Christopher Newport advancing to the Sweet 16?
One team is dancing and another isn't sleeping very well. A sellout crowd at the Batten Center for the Battle of the Bay in second round of the NCAA Division III basketball tournament. The game kept the crowd on their feet.
A Division III Hampton Roads rivalry took on a whole new meaning tonight at the Batten Center. Remember VWC traveled to Newport News earlier this season and beat CNU. The captains looking for a little revenge and nothing would be sweeter then a tournament win on the road. Nik Biberaj has been playing great down the stretch, he led the way for the Captains with 25 points.
CNU's captain Tra Benefield also kept the Captains in the game finishing with 16 points, but the Marlins still had the lead at the end of the second. Virginia Wesleyan senior Chris Astorga with the great effort, he finished with 15 points.
The star of the second half, Marlins junior Forwar Colby Heard. No doubt he was the sixth man for the Marlins. Heard was all over Biberaj. Off the bench he scored 17 points.
A great year for CNU and Head Coach John Krikorian, but the home court made a difference in the Hampton Roads basketball showcase. 80-69 the final.
The Marlins move on to play Williams College March 16th. No site has been chosen yet for that game.
