NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - "Pink in the Rink" night at Scope brought a sellout crowd to Scope. The pink ice to help raise awareness for breast cancer. This annual even has become one of the biggest nights on the Admirals calendar.
The work to get that pink ice started right after Saturday's game. The ice crew shaves off a couple of layers of ice, then they flood the rink, and add a pink pigment, then flood the rink some more to have a clear coat. In turn, a very busy 24 hours for the Admirals staff.
"I was getting text updates at 4 a.m." said Admirals Vice President Joe Gregory.
While the ice looked great Sunday night, that wasn't the case at the first "Pink in the Rink" night. Director of Media Relations Keith Phillips remembers that night back in January of 2008.
"The rink was a fuchsia color and you couldn't see the red or blue lines," said Phillips.
The Pink in the Rink night benefits the Tidewater affiliate of the Susan Komen for the Cure.
