NEW ORLEANS (WAVY/AP) - A big win for the Monarch nation. Old Dominion University's men's basketball team defeated the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame during the first round match of the NCAA tournament in New Orleans Thursday afternoon.
ODU's Webb Center in Norfolk was full of people and full of excitement. A campus organization called the Monarch Maniacs arranged to have televisions with the game on throughout the community center, for groups to gather and watch. When the game ended, the building erupted with enthusiasm, with shouts and high-fives.
This was ODU's first NCAA tournament win in 15 years.
Carleton Scott's 3-pointer rattled out in the closing seconds of the game, and 11th-seeded ODU delivered the first upset of the NCAA tournament when it stunned sixth-seeded Notre Dame 51-50 in the South Regional.
The Fighting Irish rushed the ball up the court as the clock wound down, but Scott's attempt to tie the game didn't fall and Luke Harangody's putback at the buzzer wasn't enough.
Frank Hassell scored 15 points to lead Old Dominion (27-8), which held Harangody to only four points -- and scoreless until the final minute.
Ben Hansbrough scored 17 points to lead the Irish (23-12).
ODU will take on Baylor in round two, which defeated Sam Houston St. 68-59 Thursday. The ODU vs. Baylor game will take place Saturday. The time has not been announced.
