ODU comes from behind in 64-61 win

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - #5 Old Dominion Univerity quarterback Taylor Heinicke threw for a Division I record 730 yards and five touchdowns as Jarod Brown kicked a 25-yard field goal with 41 seconds left and Andre Simmons intercepted a pass to clinch the 64-61 win over #18/19 New Hampshire Saturday afternoon.

Heinicke's 730 yards are an NCAA Division I record and just one yard shy of the all-division record set by Zamir Amin of Menlo (Div. III) who passed for 731 yards against Cal Lutheran in 2000. Heinicke's 730-yards passes the previous Division I record of 716 yards by David Kilnger of Houston in 1990 against Arizona State. The previous FCS high was 624 set by Weber State's Jamie Martin against Idaho State in 1991.

Passing yards weren't the only Division I record set by Heinicke either. The sophomore signal caller who also ran the ball 11 times for a team-leading 61 yards totaled 791 yards of total offense surpassing the FBS record of 732 by David Klingler of Houston against Arizone State in 1990 and the FCS record 668 by Robert Kent of Jackson State vs. Alabama in 2001.

ODU, which trailed by as many as 20 and was behind 40-24 at the break, scored three-straight touchdowns to start the fourth quarter.

Two touchdowns from Nick Mayers and a two-yard run from Angus Harper gave ODU its first lead of the game, 61-54, with 4:39 left in the game.

Less than a minute later, the Wildcats knotted the game at 61-61 with Andy Vailas on a 45-yard pass to R.J. Harris.

On the Monarchs following drive, ODU traveled 74 yards in 11 plays to set up Brown's game-winning field goal.
