WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Capitals shut down former teammate Alexander Semin, scored a goal with a one-of-a-kind combo and put together a second consecutive impressive performance, beating the Carolina Hurricanes 3-0 Tuesday night. Nicklas Backstrom scored in the first period and supplied the pass for John Erskine's goal in the second.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Otto Porter has put both himself and Georgetown into the top 10. The Hoyas this week are No. 7, making them one of only one of four schools to crack the top 10 in each of the last seven seasons. And Porter is in the top 10 of many NBA mock drafts, with scouts no doubt impressed with his all-around game that has lifted Georgetown to first place in the Big East headed into Wednesday's contest at Connecticut.

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — Stan Okoye scored 32 points as Virginia Military Institute pulled away from Liberty 83-66 Tuesday night to snap a six-game losing streak. The Keydets, who also defeated the Flames 82-69 on Jan. 9, accomplished the first regular-season sweep by either team since the Flames won twice in 2006-07.

WASHINGTON (AP) — D.C. United have signed Panamanian midfielder Marcos Sanchez on a one-year loan. United announced Tuesday that Sanchez will be available to play once he has his international transfer certificate and work visa.
