NEW YORK (AP) — The Memphis Grizzlies won their seventh straight game, 76-72 over the Brooklyn Nets last night. Deron Williams led Brooklyn with 24 points. C.J. Watson had 11 points and Andray Blatche added 10 for the Nets, who were without Joe Johnson because of a sore left heel.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Portland Trail Blazers snapped their longest losing streak of the season at seven games with a 92-86 win over the Boston Celtics last night. Paul Pierce had 23 points and eight assists for the Celtics, who were playing their third game in four nights.
SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Zdeno Chara and Milan Lucic scored first-period goals and the Boston Bruins beat the Florida Panthers 4-1 yesterday. Chris Kelly had a power-play goal in the second and Daniel Paille had an empty-net goal in the third. Tuukka Rask stopped 34 shots for the Bruins, who won their third straight game.
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) — Defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti's first NHL goal snapped a tie midway through the third period, and the Carolina Hurricanes rallied to beat the New York Islanders 4-2 and snap a three-game losing streak last night. Sanguinetti fired a snap shot from the top of the right circle over the glove hand of goalie Kevin Poulin at 10:17. The 24-year-old defenseman had one assist in 20 NHL games before yesterday.
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The Winnipeg Jets beat the New Jersey Devils 4-2 yesterday. Travis Zajac and Steve Bernier had goals for New Jersey, but the Devils lost their fourth in five games and their second at home this season. Johan Hedberg, a late-minute replacement for Martin Brodeur, stopped 23 shots.
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Jon Lester pitched two scoreless innings in his first start of spring training, leading the Boston Red Sox to a 5-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals yesterday. Lester retired all six batters he faced, striking out one. He needed 24 pitches — 17 strikes — to get through the two innings.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — New York Yankees outfielder Curtis Granderson is going to be out up to 10 weeks with a broken right forearm. The slugger was hit by a pitch from Toronto's J.A. Happ in the bottom of the first inning yesterday. The Yankees initially called it bruise but X-rays revealed the break. The Blue Jays' split squad went on to beat the Yankees 2-0.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Yankees captain Derek Jeter is about two weeks away from playing in a game for the first time since breaking his ankle last fall. New York general manager Brian Cashman says the shortstop should be ready to play in spring training games around March 10th.
