VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - A committee determined a Virginia Beach high school football player violated a residency policy. The decision means Ocean Lakes High School will likely have to forfeit all of its wins.
Beach District Chairman Donald E. Robertson, Jr. told WAVY.com the violation was discovered after administration at First Colonial High School in Virginia Beach questioned the eligibility of a member of the Ocean Lakes High School football team. They claimed the player did not legally reside in the school's attendance zone.
After reviewing information submitted by Ocean Lakes principal Cheryl Askew and First Colonial principal Dale Holt, the committee unanimously agreed that the player was in violation of Section 28-6-3 of the Virginia High School League Handbook. The VHSL policy states the penalty for this violation is forfeiture of all games in which the athlete played while ineligible and payment of a fine. The VHSL is still determining the penalty in this case.
"Indisputably, this decision will cause anguish for the fine athletes and the larger community associated with the Ocean Lakes Dolphins," Robertson said in a news release.
The administration at Ocean Lakes can appeal the decision, which Robertson says they intend to do.
Ocean Lakes beat First Colonial 34-14 on October 2. Ocean Lakes' next game is scheduled for this Friday again Green Run.
