NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - ODU sophomore quarterback Taylor Heinicke won the Walter Payton Award Monday night in Philadelphia.
Heinicke made national headlines in September when he broke NCAA Division I records with 730 passing yards and gained 791 yards of total offense.
The award honors the FCS best offensive player. The other finalists were Wofford fullback Eric Breitenstein and Stony Brook running back Miguel Maysonet.
Just last week, all three finalists were named to the Associated Press' FCS All-America team. Earlier this month, Heinicke was awarded the Dudley Award by the Touchdown Club of Richmond.
Heinicke ranks third in the nation in completions per game and broke a school record seven TDs.
