Heinicke still in national spotlight

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - It's been three days since Taylor Heinicke rewrote the college football record books, and the media swarm has not died down.

Media outlets all over the country are gushing over his 730-yard passing day against New Hampshire.

The soft-spoken sophomore from Atlanta is not used to being the center of attention.

"I would much rather be at home, just eating some chips and watching TV, but I'm right here in front of all these cameras, it's kind of nerve wracking," Heinicke said.

Carol Hudson, the long-time Sports Information Director at ODU, says Heinicke's performance and the Monarchs comeback, is one of the greatest sports moments in Old Dominion history.

"It's probably one of the all time greats, at the top of the list. I've seen some great ones, beating Depaul and Virginia and Syracuse," Hudson said. "The fact we were down so far and just kept coming back and coming back."

Rewriting the record books has brought national attention the ODU football team has never seen.

"Just seeing ODU's name out there for football, that's what's outstanding," Hudson said.

ODU had to rally from a 23 point second half deficit, and it wasn't untill well after the game that Heinicke realized he made history.

"After everybody was celebrating and coach gave his speech, coach Whitcomb, the quarterbacks coach came in excited and I said, 'Why are you so excited?' and he held up the stat sheet and said, 'You have the records now,' he wanted to take all the credit for it, but we had a good time after the game."

Ted Alexander has called every ODU football game on the radio and he thought Heincke's numbers were a mistake.

"We thought there was a glitch in the iPad that keeps our stats and the stat that said 730 yards, I couldn't believe it because when you are in the moment you arent' adding them up yard by yard, but when you saw that it was unbelievable," Alexander said.

Can we expect an encore performance anytime soon?

"It's going to be tough to double that game, but I'm going to go into every game trying to beat it," Heinicke said.

Heinicke's first chance to match his record-setting game is Saturday on the road against the Richmond Spiders.
