STORRS, Conn. (AP) — UConn spring football is under way. Coach Paul Pasqualoni began the annual practice two weeks earlier than usual so that the spring game can be played April 20, when it won't interfere with finals. The actual season will begin August 29 against Towson.

PRINCETON, N.J. (AP) — UConn -- along with Indiana, Washington and Boston College -- has been lined up for next season's 2K Sports Classic. Those four will each host a regional round in mid-November before the semifinals are played at New York's Madison Square Garden.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Knicks center Amare Stoudemire has had surgery on his right knee, with the team saying he will likely miss at least six weeks. Stoudemire missed the first 30 games of the season after having the same surgery on his left knee during the preseason.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Spencer Hawes led the 76ers with 24 points and 10 rebounds while Jrue Holiday added 15 points as the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Brooklyn Nets last night, 106-97. Deron Williams had 27 pints and 13 assists for the Nets, whose winning streak ended at three.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Derek Jeter went 0 for 2 in his second game as a DH but the Yankees downed the Cardinals in Tampa, Florida, yesterday, 4-0. Kevin Youkilis hit a solo home run off of St. Louis starter Lance Lynn. Jeter could play shortstop on Wednesday.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Although Yankees GM Brian Cashman admits there's next to no chance, but he's still expressing interest in trying to lure former Braves superstar Chipper Jones out of retirement to become a Yankee. Cashman also says he's talked with Derrek Lee about possibly signing with the team.

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — Jonathon Niese allowed one hit over 4 2-3 innings as the Mets blanked the Tigers 11-0 in Lakeland, Florida, yesterday. The Tigers' Justin Verlander had his first bad outing of spring training, allowing five runs and two homers over 4 1-3 innings.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The Jets have signed quarterback David Garrard as a backup for starter mark Sanchez. Garrard started 76 games over nine seasons with Jacksonville but hasn't played in the NFL since 2010, the year after he played in the Pro Bowl.

NEW YORK (AP) — New Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg says Mark Sanchez likely has a "little bit of a leg up" in the team's quarterback competition. It looks like Sanchez will stay with the Jets, largely because of the $8.25 million in guarantees he's owned this year.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Giants have put a first-round tender on wide receiver Victor Cruz, allowing him to enter restricted free agency. Team owner John Mara says the Giants will risk having Cruz agree to a deal with another club. The Giants have the right to match any other team's offer.
