NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Unfortunately, as exciting as the offense was, the Old Dominion defense gave up too many points, and too many big plays.
Like a 53-yard touchdown by Towson that cost the Monarchs the CAA championship. Not to mention the 55 points racked up by Georgia Southern last week.
Despite a winning season that took the team to the second playoff round, Old Dominion University head football coach Bobby Wilder announced Wednesday that members of the coaching staff will not return next season.
Andy Rondeau, the Monarchs' defensive coordinator, and Jarod Dodson, the assistant defensive coordinator, will not return to the ODU staff.
"We had the third best run defense in the CAA in 2011 and the second worst pass defense," said Wilder in a news release. "I feel we have the talent to improve our pass defense and I am determined we will."
Assistant coach Keita Malloy will take over as the assistant defensive coordinator. And assistant coach Bill Dee will step into the role of acting defensive coordinator. Zohn Burden will now oversee the wide receivers.
Football returned to ODU in 2009. Since then, ODU has become the winningest start-up program in FCS history, with a three-year total of 27 wins and only eight losses.
This past Monday, Wilder agreed to sign a ten-year contract extension.
