NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - While Division I teams wrap up their regular season, Division III college basketball teams are heading into the second week of their playoffs.
That's good news for Hampton Roads fans, because we have a great game on tap for Saturday night.
The long drawn out Division III basketball tournament can be a challenge the first couple of weeks, but you won't see any fatigue in Virginia Beach Saturday night when Virginia Wesleyan welcomes Christopher Newport in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
This will be the second meeting of the season between these two rivals. Since losing to Wesleyan, CNU has won 7 of its last 8 games, won the the USA South regular season and tournament championships, and then beat Rutgers-Newark last week in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
"It's our goal every year to be playing in March and here we are in the second round of the NCAA's," said CNU Head Coach John Krikorian. "We feel great about the opportunity that we have and we learned a lot during that stretch. We lost three games in a row. Virginia Wesleyan was the middle team so we feel that we're playing our best basketball because of what we had to endure. "
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. Saturday night in Virginia Beach at the Batten Center.
