HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - They're one of the hottest hoops teams in Hampton Roads, winners of ten straight.
"Coach Six is a hard core defensive coach and we practice a hard defense and we know defense wins championships," said senior Quarterback Kieria Avant.
The seniors on this year's Lady Pirates women's basketball team are just trying to win one last MEAC championship.
Kieria Avant who played high school basketball at Indian River is one of those seniors going for four in a row.
"The four years has gone by so fast and being a senior in college now is amazing. So is winning three championships, I just hope I am able to win that fourth and make history," said Avant.
Head Coach David Six is only in his fourth year and all he has done is break records. He's led the Lady Pirates to three straight MEAC Championships and as they try for four, Six said it just gets harder.
"Quite honestly if you make it that far and I don' think they will have the jitters and I think also winning the conference tournament and making it to the NCAA you become the Yankees," said Head Coach David Six.
Coach Six calls senior Olivia Allen the team's biggest surprise of the season. She missed five games because of a concussion but is still one the team's leading scorers.
"I think the fact that he simplified everything and we only run about two or three plays. We have a lot more space to do whatever we want now and every shot just keeps going in."
They're defense is ranked in the top ten in the country, Nicole Hamilton is hopeful that top ranked defense earn them not just an NCAA tournament birth, but a win.
"I want to see us winning the MEAC and actually through the end of the NCAA," said Hamilton.
The Pirates play the Spartans Monday as they go for 11 straight. The game airs on ESPNU at 4:30p.m.
