VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Virginia Beach police have identified the runner who collapsed and died in Sunday's Rock 'N' Roll 1/2 Marathon at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.
At 8:50 a.m. police say 23-year-old Erik Wellumson of Chesapeake collapsed near 8th Street and Atlantic Avenue. Medics were nearby and tried to resuscitate him. Wellumson was transported to the hospital where doctors later pronounced him dead.
Rock 'N' Roll Half Marathon officials released this statement from Dr. Lewis Maharam, the medical director for Elite Racing:
"At Sunday's half marathon a race participant collapsed in front of medical personnel. The runner was immediately treated and transported to the hospital where the participant was pronounced dead. We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss. We have spoken with the family and they have asked everyone to please respect their privacy during this difficult time."
Police continue to investigate the cause of death.
