NORFOLK, Va. - "We're in the final stages now of making sure the lights work and the plants are where they're supposed to be, making sure the grass is growing...," said Karen Scherberger, Fest Events staffer.
On Tuesday, Scherberger was out at the park not conducting an inspection, but trying to sell it, or at least pieces of it.
"Its an opportunity for all of our donors, businesses and local residents to come down and pick out the exact spot for their brick or their tree, or their bench...," said Scherberger.
That's right, you can call a piece of the park your own. For a donation towards the cost of construction your name will forever be engraved or attached to a brick, tree or bench. Standard bricks go for a hundred dollars each. A 12 x 12 marker or a bench can be yours for $2,500, but the trees go for $5,000.
"So we purchased a bench to honor our board member that passed away, Captain A.R. Douglas. He was a tug boat captain and had a tug boat here," said Rob Robins, Senior Vice President of Bay Diesel Corporation, a long-time supporter of Fest Events.
Dominique Fini, Fest Events Operations Director and a relative newcomer to Norfolk, is seizing a chance to become part of the city's history.
"My family and I have only been here for 15 years, but after we're gone, we'll be here forever," said Fini.
Fest Events will be accepting sponsorships throughout the year.
But if you want your brick or bench in place in time for the opening ceremony on July 4th weekend, you need to get that order in by June first.
Harbor Fest will open the park on July 3rd.
