NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Several families will be dealing with storm cleanup over the
next few days, but one family in Newport News is facing an
additional tragedy.
A huge tree came crashing down on the Masters' family dog
"Rocky."
The tree crushed the miniature daschund and killed him.
"This is Sammie," said John Masters, as Sammie let out a low
growl, "Rocky's sister."
One year old Sammie seems to know what happened to her twin
brother, "Rocky."
A gust of wind, the explosive snap of a huge tree and Rocky
was dead.
"She knows he's gone. She's looking for him. They've never
spent a minute apart. They sleep together, sit on the couch
together. She's looking for him," said Masters.
A 100 foot pine tree came crashing down on Rocky as he sat in
the backyard with Sammie and a third family dog Wednesday morning
in their Beverly Hills neighborhood of Newport News.
It was bright and sunny, then suddenly Masters' wife heard
it.
"And she said it sounded like a freight train and out of
nowhere a huge snap."
Then, she found Rocky, underneath a huge, heavy limb. He was
not breathing, and obviously dead. The other two dogs, still
missing.
"My wife was hysterical, screaming wanting to find the dogs."
Suddenly, Sammie showed up, in the arms of a construction
worker who was on a job across the street.
"She got to the neighbor's house and was covered in bark and
mud."
While, Sammie and the family's third dog were both ok, the
Masters' knew they would have to break the news to their 15 year
old son that his Rocky had been killed, and they knew that would
break his heart.
Their son, still has the family's other two dogs though. They
are both safe and sound at home.
