VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The winds caused power outages throughout the Hampton Roads area. At one point on Wednesday, Virginia Dominion Power spokesperson Karl Neddenien told WAVY.com they had 38,000 customers without power throughout the state.
Neddenien added that crews were working hard to return power to those without and that extra crews were called in from vacation to assist.
Dominion warns anyone who sees an electrical line on the ground to treat it as though it were live. That is, stay away from it and call 1-888-667-3000.
Wind gusts up to 60 mph also affected travelers on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.
The tunnel operated under a level 4 wind restriction. The only vehicles permitted to cross were mini-vans, SUVs and pick-up trucks. Vehicles with exterior cargo were not allowed to cross.
