PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Police say Meghan Landowski was found dead in her home just hours after walking home from school Thursday. They say a family member made the discovery at the home on Roberts Court West in Portsmouth.
"It's shocking. I don't believe it. I mean I know it happened, but it's just not sinking in," says Ashley Peacock, Meghan's best friend.
Ashley took pictures of the sign in front of Wilson High School. It reads, "We Luv U Meghan." The sign honors Ashley's best friend, a friend she can now only see in pictures and memories.
"We'd talk about everything. She would tell me everything. I would tell her everything. Shared stuff from memories to clothes."
Meghan's classmates say she was acting unusual Thursday between their mid-term exams.
"She begged me if she could come to my house and I said no because I had too many people coming over already," says Charlie Humphries, Meghan's friend.
Friends say one girl did walk Meghan home when school let out around 11, but she didn't stay over. Just four hours later, police say a family member found the 16-year-old, dead in her home on Roberts Court West.
Ashley found out around 5 Thursday afternoon.
"I was at my friend Jennifers and I broke down."
Friday at Wilson High School, mid-terms continued, but rather than answers students were filled with sorrowful questions.
"I think it affected people a lot. A lot of people couldn't concentrate. Everybody was talking about it every time you turned around," says Kelsey Brown.
Some students will finish their mid-terms next week as the loss of Meghan is all they can think about. Counselors are now helping students deal with the loss of this girl who many say brought joy to their days.
"She was there when you needed her. She was always loud and smiling. She was crazy. She was really outgoing," says Charlie.
Portsmouth Police say they still don't have any suspect information and they still aren't sure how Meghan died.
A vigil is being held on Meghan's street at 9pm Friday night. Friends and classmates are expected to attend.
