NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY.com) -- Former pro football player and
Newport News native Michael Vick was in a Newport News Federal
Bankruptcy Court Thursday morning; not in person, but by phone from
his new home at the Leavenworth Kansas U.S. Penitentiary where he
is incarcerated.
WAVY.com was the only news outlet represented in the
courtroom during the proceedings, during which the only time you
could hear Vick was when he was asked by Judge Frank Santoro, "Are
you there Mr. Vick?" "Yes Sir" was the response.
The hearing was to set dates for what is called a "341
Meeting" which is the initial meeting of creditors. In the
Newport News courtroom was the Official Committee of Unsecured
Creditors representing among others the Royal Bank of Canada,
Richmond Based Joel Enterprises, and Radtke Sports.
The biggest sticking point is Vick's $80,000 Mercedes Benz he
apparently gave to his new financial advisor David Talbot. An
IRS representative was in court reminding the Judge that the IRS
has a lien on the car for possible back taxes Vick owes.
Outside Court, WAVY.com asked Talbot where the car is and he
said "Florida". Talbot would not answer any questions except
the one about how Michael Vick is doing; "He's doing as well as can
be expected. He's a good kid."
He then left the courthouse with local attorney Paul Campsen
of Kaufman and Canoles. Campsen is a well respected
bankruptcy attorney who is representing Vick in the proceedings.
