CHESAPEAKE, VA. (WAVY.com) -- 18-year-old Ra-Shawn Finney - number 8 - is a star on the field and off.
"Solid, solid guy," said Coach Larry Archie.
Ra-Shawn has a 3.7 GPA, plans to go to college and maybe join the Air Force.
"My son gonna be alright," said his mom Desiree Finney.
Saturday night, someone nearly shattered it all. Desiree Finney says her son Ra-Shawn was shot seven to eight times.
"He tried to kill my son and by the grace of God he didn't hit him in no main organs. It just was a bunch of holes," said Desiree.
Ra-Shawn was at a party in Chesapeake. His mom says he may have been trying to break-up a fight. Now, the football player, nicknamed Peanut, is holding onto life instead of living it.
"I was in shock," said Ra-Shawn's twin brother Da-Shawn.
So is the I.C. Norcom High School football team.
"The first thing that went through my head was, 'is he alive,'" said Coach Larry Archie.
He says he encourages his players to stay out of trouble.
"I say to these guys every day, 'be a better man.' You'll be a man a lot longer than a football player."
It's uncertain whether or not Ra-Shawn has a future as a football player, but his mom knows there's more for him in the future.
"When I see his face I knew. Can't nobody tell me nothing else. I just already knew he was gonna be alright," said Desiree.
