Where to find jobs in Hampton Roads

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - With nearly 400 Northrop Grumman workers laid off Friday morning, many will start looking for the jobs and 10 On Your Side is here to help.

There are some jobs out there in this economy, but the challenge is capturing a career.

"I'm at that tipping point now," Will Christopher said. The sales specialist from Norfolk has been unemployed for more than a year.

Christopher finds his skills are not necessarily the ones in demand. "I know what my gifts are. I know what I have to offer. I just have to find the right place."

WAVY.com asked employment recruiter Jennifer Tomlin where to find the hot jobs.

She sees most professional openings in the areas of accounting, pay roll, web design and software development.

10 On Your Side also found jobs in the health care field, specifically for experienced nurses with specialized skills.

Tomlin said to get more than one resume ready. "You need to have several resumes and they need to be rich in key words because many times they're being matched using cloud computing," said Tomlin.

That means, if you don't include key words that match the job description in your resume a computer may weed it out.

Tomnlin advises to take your time, get the resume right, and then get out and do something.

Stores like Garden Ridge in Chesapeake are hiring seasonal help, and so are some Sears, J.C. Penny, and Macy's locations.

"It looks good that someone is working in interim positions," Tomlin said.

Christopher isn't ready to take a part-time gig just yet, but he is continually networking.

"I want to continue to develop those relationships, because I never know whether it's today or tomorrow. It could certainly lead me somewhere," said Christopher.

Perhaps, he said, the perfect job he never knew he wanted.
