RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) - The Virginia Department of Taxation is warning citizens of a new phone scam.
The department is receiving reports of phone calls to taxpayers that their “Way2Go prepaid MasterCard is locked for security reasons.” The caller attempts to get the taxpayer to divulge personal information.
According to the department, the call is a scam and the department will never ask for personal information in that manner.
Anyone who receives a call should hang up immediately. If the call is recorded on voicemail, delete the message. Never give personal information over the phone unless the source can be verified.
Those with questions about the scam should call the customer services department at 1-804-367-8031.
