PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - The editors of CNNMoney.com are revealing the top things we waste our money on. If you cut back on some of items listed you could save thousands each year!
You hear it over and over, it's the little things that add up. And some of the items on this list may come as a surprise, especially when you hear how much they cost consumers each year.
One of the biggest money wasters -- the ATM. You can spend as much as $5 in fees every time you use an out-of-network money machine. If you do that just 5 times a month it equals about $300 per year. Take that extra step by going to your bank's ATM to avoid those unnecessary fees.
Next big money waster -- the lottery. People can spend up to $20 a week on scratch tickets. That's more than $1,000 per year. And not to be negative, but last year consumers spent $70-billion on lottery tickets. Only about half that number was awarded in prizes.
Another huge waste of money -- gourmet coffee. The average person spends $8 every time they visit their favorite coffee shop. If you only spend half that each weekday morning, it'll still cost you about $80 per month. The cheaper alternative -- brew your own coffee.
Next of the big money wasters -- cigarettes. Not only are they bad for your health, but also your budget. If the average smoker quits the habit they could save about $300 a month.
And finally -- those enticing internet deals. Buy now for 50-percent off, then redeem later. But Lifesta , a site that buys back unused deals, estimates 20-percent of all daily deals purchased are never redeemed. Experts say if you see a deal, ask yourself if it's something you'd use, even if you never saw the offer.
