HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) - Looking for a way to dispose of that old computer? Goodwill Industries has the answer. For nearly five years, Goodwill has had a "Don't Dump, Donate" computer recycling program and they want your old computer.
Goodwill will even take computers that don't work and literally smash the hard drive and sell the remains to vendors. On computers that do work, Goodwill will erase the hard drive and sell it. All other parts, monitors, printers and such are cleaned up and put up for sale.
And though as ambitious as the Goodwill program is, they and other recyclers estimate they're still getting just one-tenth of the computers that need to be recycled.
"People are able to get those at a great price, we're able to keep them out of the landfills and we're able to help put people back to work in our community," Bo Hussey with Goodwill Industries said.
