Verify organization's authenticity

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) - The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is warning people making a donation or purchase in the name of charity to first verify the organization's authenticity.

According to the department, a group, claiming to be part of "Veterans Services of Hampton Roads," located in the 2400 blk. of Virginia Beach Blvd. in Virginia Beach is soliciting contributions for alleged charitable purposes. However, the group has not filed with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services as required by law, nor is the group affiliated with the Virginia Department of Veterans Services.

Be careful when contributing to such an organization, as your donation may not be going to any charitable purpose.

The Department recommends taking these steps before donating to any charity:

  • Verify the authenticity of the organization since disreputable organizations often use sound-alike names to prey on the good name of well-known charities.

  • Ensure that the organization is registered with the Office of Consumer Affairs. Current registration status for charitable organizations can be found on the Department's Website by clicking on the link called "Charitable Search".

  • Consumers should also determine how much of their donation will actually be used to support the organization's charitable purpose, and how much will be used for other expenses such as administrative overhead and fundraising.

You may also call the department's Hotline, toll-free in Virginia at 800.552.9963.
