In recognition and honor of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., WAVY TV and KIDTALK are sponsoring the KIDTALK 2012 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest. This is a way for the young people of Hampton Roads to continue to find meaning and relevance in the legacy of Dr. King.

Winners will be invited to appear on KidTalk to read from their essays and participate in the show focusing on the work of Dr. King. We invite teachers to engage their students and encourage participation in this contest.

THEME

Ending bullying with non-violence.
Bullying has unfortunately become a growing concern in our schools. Dr. King often spoke of resolving issues in a non-violent manner. What non-violent actions can be taken to resolve bullying and also exemplify the idea of living Dr. King’s legacy? Students should demonstrate familiarity with Dr. King’s work. They should understand what Dr. King valued and preached and discuss the impact of Dr. King’s dream of promoting non-violence in our communities. Well-written essays will  demonstrate informed insights as well as motivational elements.
