NORFOLK, Va. - An elderly Norfolk couple was hospitalized following a violent home invasion.
The couple has lived a rather peaceful existence in their home on Sunset Drive in the Bayview neighborhood, for more than 50 years, until Tuesday morning's violence.
Police say a man, believed to be in his 90s and a woman, believed to be in her 80s, were beaten severely and that their injuries appear life threatening due to their age.
Neighbors were shocked to learn of the incident. "I'm not leaving my doors unlocked anymore, " one woman who did not want to be identified said.
"It's quiet. No problems around here. I'm going to keep an eye out that's for sure. I got four kids," said neighbor Brian Quigley.
Police say a back window was open when officers arrived. Neighbors say the woman was able to call a relative who lived close by for help.
The victims have not been identified.
Police say there was another home invasion Monday afternoon, just a few blocks away, but police do not know if the two cases are related; they continue to investigate.
