CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (AP) - Virginia Tech President Charles Steger is no longer a defendant in two wrongful death lawsuits filed by the families of two students who were killed in the 2007 mass shootings.

Special Justice William Alexander has dismissed Steger from the $10 million lawsuits.

Alexander notified the parties in a Jan. 25 letter that the Roanoke Times obtained this week.

According to the newspaper, Alexander ruled that the families' negligence claims against the commonwealth may go forward.

The decision leaves the commonwealth as the only named defendant.

Plaintiffs' attorney Bob Hall has asked Alexander to reinstate Steger as a defendant. A hearing by conference call on Hall's motion is set for Tuesday.
