Weekend nets 3,000 arrests, summonses

RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) - Virginia State Police report the "Operation Air, Land and Speed" Saturday, Sept. 22 ended in more than 3,000 arrests and summons.

According to VSP, the traffic safety program was conducted among Interstates 81, 95, 64, 66 and 85.

There were only three arrests during the entire 10-hour operation, and all three were given on Interstate 81.

Twenty-two seat belt violations, 80 reckless driving and 301 speeding tickets were given across Interstate 64.

Funds generated through summonses issued by troopers will go directly to court fees as well as the state's Literary Fund for public school construction, technology funding and teacher retirement.
