VIRGINIA, Va. - Starting July 1, it will be illegal for Virginians to text while they drive.
One week out, AAA and Chesapeake Delegate John Cosgrove held a news conference to emphasize the importance of the new law.
AAA projects that more than 900,000 travelers are expected on Virginia's highways this Fourth of July weekend. With that in mind, the ban on texting while driving couldn't come at a better time.
The new law aims to decrease driving distraction and increase safety on Virginia roads, according to AAA.
AAA reports that last year, 28,395 crashes occurred in the Commonwealth involved driver distraction. Of those, 114 people died and 14,480 were injured.
Delegate John Cosgrove of Chesapeake, who presented House Bill (HB) 1876 for consideration, emphasized the importance of keeping your mind focused on driving. AAA Tidewater Virginia was pleased to support Delegate Cosgrove in his efforts.
Texting takes your eyes off the road, your hands off the wheel and your mind off the traffic says Georjeane Blumling, Vice President of AAA Tidewater Virginia. Taking your eyes off the roads for as little as 3 seconds can make the difference between a safe stop and a rear-end collision.
The new law carries a fine of $20.
