RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A Richmond man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison on dogfighting-related charges.
Authorities believe it's the longest sentence ever handed down in Virginia in a dogfighting case.
Richmond Circuit Judge Beverly W. Snukals sentenced 33-year-old Richard E. Robinson on Thursday. Robinson also must pay a $2,500 fine and more than $4,000 in restitution to Richmond Animal Care and Control.
Robinson was convicted earlier of three felonies and one misdemeanor related to a dogfighting operation at his home in South Richmond.
Authorities recovered 11 pit bulls and another dog in June from the home. Nine dogs judged to be severely aggressive and one that had infected wounds were euthanized.
