Va. House votes to override 1 gov. veto

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Virginia House of Delegates has narrowly voted to override one of Gov. Bob McDonnell's vetoes.

The bill would allow localities to increase from $100 to $250 the license tax they can impose on motorists who register their car in another state to circumvent the personal property tax on vehicles. Democratic Del. Mark Sickles of Fairfax said it's a problem in northern Virginia, where thousands of residents drive cars with Maryland plates.

The Republican governor said a different state law deals with the problem. But the GOP-controlled House voted 64-31 to override his veto.

If the Senate also musters a two-thirds vote to override the veto, the bill will become law over McDonnell's objections.

Lawmakers are considering the governor's vetoes and amendments at the annual, one-day reconvened session Wednesday.
