CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - The University of Virginia and Virginia Tech are expanding into Newport News.

The schools said Wednesday they are jointly opening the University of Virginia Eastern Regional Center at Newport News this fall. They already operate centers in Richmond and Falls Church together.

The University of Virginia recently closed its Virginia Beach center. The new school will allow students to enroll in its School of Continuing and Professional Studies' portfolio of certificate programs and courses in subjects such as finance, management and administration and information technology.

The Eastern Regional Center at Newport News will include several classrooms outfitted with videoconferencing equipment to link students to professors in other locales.
