TSA at Richmond International made discovery

RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY/AP) - TSA officers at Richmond International Airport found a .45 caliber Ruger firearm and two loaded magazines in the carry-on luggage of 46-year-old Christopher Dean Shackleford of Virginia Beach.

Travel at the airport was not impacted by the discovery.

Airport officials say Shackleford is charged with carrying a weapon in an airport terminal and carry a concealed weapon. He was later allowed to continue traveling, and told officials he'd forgotten about the gun in his bag.

TSA Spokeswoman Kawika Riley said finding a gun is not as surprising as you may think.

“This year alone, TSA officers at airport checkpoints across the nation have detected over 1,100 firearms. While this is a daily occurrence for our officers, it is also a reminder about the importance of strong aviation security,"Riley said.

Weapons are not allowed on board aircrafts. However, some weapons can be transported in checked luggage, depending on local laws.

TSA advises you check with local law enforcement, before you bring any weapon to an airport.
