Officer removed for sexual harassment

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - A Navy report shows that the commanding officer of a Florida-based warship was removed from the post during an overseas deployment after several female crew members alleged that he committed sexual harassment.

Cmdr. Derick Armstrong was relieved of command in May, about six months after he had been promoted to the top job aboard USS The Sullivans. The guided-missile destroyer was deployed to protect Europe from a ballistic missile attack.

At the time, the Navy said Armstrong's removal was the result of an unprofessional command climate. Details of the alleged sexual harassment appeared in an investigative report obtained by The Associated Press on Monday through an open records request. Crew members also described him as a bully.

Armstrong denied allegations in the report.

The ship is based in Mayport, Fla.
